Опис биљке: Дрво, до 30 m високо, са тамносмеђом, испуцалом кором. Листови наспрамни, прстасто сложени, са 4-9 листића, до 30 cm дугачки, средњи листић увек накдужи. Цветови неправилни, сакупљени у метличастим цвастима дугачким до 30 cm, беличасти, при дну са жутом или црвенкастом пегом. Плодови су бодљикаве зелене чауре, са 1-3 бубрежасте или округле крупне семенке сјајно смеђе боје. Цвета од маја до јуна, а плодови сазревају од септембра до октобра.
Станиште: У Србији је чест по парковима и дрворедима, најчешће на влажним, свежим и дубоким земљиштима.
Лековити део биљке: Користе се сасушене и иситњене семенке, сасушена и иситњена кора и осушени цветови.
Лековита својства: Семе дивљег кестена се због садржаја есцина користи код тромбофлебита, варикоза, едема, хемороида и за повећавање тонуса вена. Употребљава се у постоперативном и посттрауматском третману и код хроничне инсуфицијенције вена. Снижава висок (некада и превисок) крвни притисак, јер утиче на пропустљивост капилара.
Ипак, унутрашња употреба семена је дозвољена само уз надзор стручњака!!!
Припремање: Чај: 1 кашичица осушених и саситњених семенки прелити са 0,5 l кључале воде, оставити у поклопљеном суду 2 сата, процедити. У току дана узети 4 пута по пола шоље припремљеног чаја, не дуже од 4 седмице. На исти начин се може припремити чај од једне кашичице саитњене коре и 1 кашике сувих, саситњених листова кестена.
Код реуматизма и гихта користи се тинктура припремљена од цветова кестена: шаку осушених цветова прелити са 300 ml љуте ракије, оставити на топлом месту 2 седмице, процедити. Болна места тинктуром масирати. Припремљена тинктура може се користити код грчева у желуцу и несвестице, 10-15 капи 2-3 пута дневно.
Купке се припремају од 1 шаке осушених и саситњених семенки на 1 l хладне воде,
кратко се кува, процеди и дода у каду.
